Pennsylvania's what I'd call a transitional state. It's part Midwestern, part Mid-Atlantic, part even Northeastern. Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, both cities where I snagged a vest photo, are very different places economically and culturally.
From an American history perspective, it's hard to beat Philly. I got a photo near the permanent home of the Liberty Bell, in a part of town with strong ties to the founding and early history of our country.
I also spent a summer living in Philadelphia. It was the summer before I started teaching fifth grade in Chicago through Teach For America. We lived in the dorms at Temple University and taught summer school at schools around the city. While no one becomes an expert in teaching in five weeks, the crash course took me a long way from where I started, and connected me with lifelong friends.
